Designated as a Wildlife Refuge in 1973 by
the City of San Antonio, Mitchell Lake is located on about 1300 acres.
The Refuge includes several habitat types common to south-central Texas,
but its centerpiece is 600-acre Mitchell Lake itself and the adjacent
wetlands. The site is renowned among birders as one of the top birding
spots in the region-307 species have been recorded there-and it will
likely be designated an Important Bird Area. Access to it has been
limited and controlled until now by the property's owner, the San
Antonio Water System (SAWS), a public utility owned by the City of San
Antonio.
Explore a place where nature is continually renewing itself. Where
birds, insects, and wild plants surprise you with a new spectacle around
every corner. A place where families, school groups and individuals can
reflect and learn about the natural world just minutes from downtown.
Experience the wonders and discover nature through our activities and
programs...
Mitchell Lake serves as home to a wide variety of birds, especially
aquatic species. You can hike to the ponds and reservoirs throughout the
property and view some of the most beautiful flora and fauna in the
area.
